5 Movies From My Childhood You May Have Never Seen

These 5 movies from my childhood are ones I absolutely adore. Often when I tell people about them, they’ve never heard of them. I’m not quite sure how I was one of the few children to have viewed these films, but here they are. I’m interested to hear if any of you have seen these too?!

The Dark Crystal

5 Movies From My Childhood You May Have Never Seen - The Dark CrystalI recently showed The Dark Crystal to my fiancé and one of his best friends. This is a movie I loved as a child. It’s a Jim Henson movie that not a lot of people know about. We watched the movie all the way through and both of them had a complete dumbfounded look on their faces. Then they started it a second time with subtitles and instantly started to understand it. Ummmm…needless to say apparently the movie is hard to understand. It’s in English. I understood perfectly what was going on since I grew up with the movie. They however, did not. In the end I think I converted both of them to being lovers of movie. At least they won’t tell me otherwise.

This 1982 American-British fantasy film revolves around Jen, and elf-like “Gelfling” on a quest to restore balance to his alien world by returning a lost shard to a powerful, but broken gem. My dad is really into Sci-Fi. I can’t help it. It’s what I grew up with. Trust me…it’s good!

The Witching Of Ben Wagner

5 Movies From My Childhood You May Have Never Seen - Witching of Ben WagnerI loved The Witching of Ben Wagner movie as a kid. I don’t even know how many times I watched it, but it was one of the most well warn VHS’s in my parent’s movie stash. This may have been the beginning of my long love affair with detective type shows. It had just enough mystery to keep you guessing what was going to happen next.

This 1990 film was about Ben Wagner and his family moving to a new town. He meets Regina, who is rumored to come from a family of witches. Strange things start happening whenever Regina is around and Ben begins to wonder if the rumors are true. I bet you want to watch it now, don’t you? I do! And I realize this is a show I haven’t shown my fiancé  yet, so it’s definitely making it to the top of the list again. I love the innocence of this movie and the nostalgia it brings back of having adventures as a kid. Simple moments in the movie like skipping rocks across a big lake bring back so many good childhood memories.

Little Monsters

5 Movies From My Childhood You May Have Never Seen - Little MonstersLittle Monsters for sure has the Sci-Fi element. I also happen to love scary movies and kind of wonder if this is where it all started. I mean, watching a movie about monsters under the bed as a little kid is kind of scary. Am I right? What were my parent’s thinking?

This 1989 film is also about a boy who moves to a new town. I’m sensing a theme here… He discovers an underground world of monsters under his bed where there are no rules or parents. Pretty sure this is every kids dream. But true to a good plot twist, things aren’t what they seem in that underground world. Full of adventure, mystery, and some scary moments (for a kid) this was one of my favorite movies growing up. I recently rewatched this and introduced it to my fiancé. I’m not sure he quite had the same nostalgia I did, since he did not grow up watching this one. He definitely thought it was a kids movie!

Once Upon A Brother’s Grimm

5 Movies From My Childhood You May Have Never Seen - Once Upon a Brother's GrimmOnce Upon a Brother’s Grimm is yet another favorite of mine about make believe lands. And I’m not talking about the more recent 2005 addition. I’m talking about the 1977 movie. My family is German. My grandparent’s are from Germany and if you’ve ever come across German fairy tales, they aren’t quite like the ones you probably grew up with. They were definitely more dark, twisted, and written to keep kids in line.

Once Upon A Brother’s Grimm goes through eight of the best known German folk and fairy tales, including: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Town Musicians of Bremen, The Golden Goose, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, The Six Swans, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Frog Prince, and Cinderella. This one is filled with lots of fantasy and adventure and I love it!

The Burbs

5 Movies From My Childhood You May Have Never Seen - The BurbsOh, The Burbs. This entire movie centers around a court in a neighborhood. There is something oh so great about the simplicity of movies back in the day. You literally spend 1 hour and 41 minutes watching a movie about the shenanigans of neighbors and you were perfectly satisfied in doing so.

This 1989 movie is about an overstressed suburbanite and his fellow neighbors that are convinced the new family on the block are part of a murderous Satanic cult. Again, what were my parent’s thinking?

So there’s my list. I have a few more that were childhood favorites, but I feel like these five were the most unique and ones other people tend to not have seen. What movies do you remember from your childhood that you love? I’m always looking for good movie suggestions!

I always feel a sence of accomplishment when I read lists and have seen everything on them … Think I now have to track them down and do a rewatch marathon of all old classics.

There is just something about kids movies, they just help you get lost in them and you forget about everything that is bothering you. I am going to find The Dark Crystal, the story line sounds interesting. 🙂
