New Year, Same Me, And Setting Realistic Goals

I’ve never been one to set New Years resolutions. Throughout the year I am constantly setting goals for myself and finding ways to improve. I never fully understood the idea of setting one big resolution at the start of the year to adhere to. Maybe it’s because I was afraid I would fail and that was too much pressure to put on myself. Maybe it’s because I don’t really feel like I need to do a huge overhaul on my life at the beginning of each new year. I’m the same person after all.

New Year, Same Me, And Setting Realistic Goals

Whether you are a resolutions person or not, there is no denying that the end of the year always brings reflection. It’s a chance for me to look back and see what I have accomplished, am still working on, or need to improve on. Naturally with this, I tend to start thinking about a new list of goals. Setting realistic goals is more in my wheelhouse as opposed to huge life changing tasks. But I’m going to try something a little different this year. I’ve never publicly put my goals out there before. I kind of like the idea of having a post to look back at throughout the year to see how I’m doing. So here it goes…

Sending Birthday Cards

Who doesn’t love receiving mail? I know I do! It’s always a nice surprise to open up your mailbox and get something other than bills. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Social media has made me LAZY. It’s so easy for Facebook to remind me when it’s someone’s birthday. I don’t need to put it on my calendar or plan ahead for it. I wake up in the morning with an instant notification telling me who’s birthday it is. I write “Happy Birthday” on their wall and proceed with my day. This year I want to make an effort to send physical birthday cards to my family and close friends. It’s a little extra forethought on my end, but it’s going to brighten their day that much more.

Explore More of the Central Coast Through Hiking

I am obsessed with hiking. I’m an archaeologist after all. For about 7 years of my life I would spend anywhere from 80 to 120 hours per month hiking. No joke! I literally got paid to be outdoors. My new job is still in the field of archaeology, but no longer has all the fieldwork. To fulfill my craving for nature I try to fit hiking into as many weekends as possible. I have a hiking book of the San Luis Obispo area that I’ve really enjoyed. Since this is all about setting realistic goals and the book has 128 hikes…I’m going to set my goal for 10 new hikes in 2018.

Disconnect More

In relation to the previous post, the majority of my fieldwork was in remote locations with zero cell phone service. It was amazing! I’ve gotten into a pretty bad habit of being on my phone all the time. While I can’t fully disconnect with a blog, I can manage my time a lot better to allow for times of disconnecting. You only get so much time to spend with your loved ones and I want to make sure I am doing a much better job of being present. To start with, I am planning to disconnect every night at 8pm. Putting my cell phone aside and spending those last couple hours before bed spending time with my husband or focusing on myself.

Read 4 New Books

I love to read and I’ve missed it so terribly much. Day to day life had gotten extremely busy and I stopped giving myself my much needed “me time.” I can feel my energy depleting these past couple of months and I need to really get back to focusing some energy on myself. Four books may not sound like a lot to all the other book nerds out there, but I want to set a goal I know I can accomplish. If anyone has some great book recommendations, I’m all ears!

What goals or resolutions did you set for yourself this year? I love hearing what others are working towards or trying to improve.

Me too! Something so great about getting out and spending time in nature.

Great goals. We all get too wrapped up in technology these days. I love being outdoors too, and I can get cranky if I don’t have enough quiet “me” time. Listening to the birds chirp, being close to nature gives me that.

I am not one to set resolutions. I am like you and just set goals I feel like they are more attainable because you can set limitations. Sometimes resolutions to me seem to broad and nothing to really measure.

Love your list! My favorite is to disconnect more. I plan to do the same. Seems the more I am disconnected electronically, the more connected I feel. ❤️

Sending birthday cards and getting disconnected more. Both seems the best resolutions. If I can send to at least 5 friends it will be a great accomplishment for me.

I am the same. I don’t like to my resolution but more like goals. My goals for 2018 is the grow my blog and my business even more.

I blog about goals and motivation, and I like to keep it simple and doable in my life. I read more last year and cut back on blogging and loved it. I plan to do the same this year. Happy 2018!

I love how your goals connect you with yourself, those you love and nature – pretty cool you work in archaeology, by the way. I definitely would like to focus on being more present and make time to just relax without feeling the need to squeeze a bunch of things into that relaxing time.

You’re an Archaeologist?! How cool! I feel the same way, I was never one to make New Years Resolutions especially one big one. I think doing small goals weekly or monthly can be just as great!

I truly love all of these goals! And books have really helped me disconnect from everyday life! Keep us updated on what books you end up reading, would love to hear 🙂

Setting realistic goals is so important, but don’t be afraid to step up the game a little and don’t be afraid to fail. For me, goals are just a way to keep me motivated and focused. At the end of the year, I realize that some things work out, some don’t, but that’s ok as long as I know that I did my best. That being said, I hope you have a great 2018, full of love and happiness. Keep up the good work!
