Simple Guide To Selecting and Installing a WordPress Theme

Now that your blog is self-hosted¬†on Bluehost the next step is choosing the perfect WordPress theme. Your theme is what your readers are going to see first. Think of it as your first introduction to your brand. You want to take into consideration the overall feel you are going for, who your audience is going to be, and your blog’s purpose.

Step 1: Brainstorm

This might seem like a random first step, but it will honestly set you up for the most success from the get go. I suggest taking some time to look at other websites and blogs you like. Jot down some notes on what you like about them. Do you like the color scheme? Are there specific features you enjoy? How do the different layouts look and what ones are your favorite?

Don’t forget to take notes on the things you don’t like. Is the blog hard to navigate? Can you easily tell what their blog is about? Are there fonts and links that are easier to read than others?

Step 2: Free Theme Versus Premium Theme

Once you’ve brainstormed and have a better idea of what you are looking for it will be easier to narrow down a theme for your blog. There are going to be many factors to think about when choosing between a free theme or premium theme. Free themes are great if you are on a budget or blogging more for a hobby. Maybe you aren’t really sure yet if you want to jump into the business side and would rather spend some time building an audience first.

Premium themes may cost a little upfront, but they offer lots of advantages. They typically offer more features than free themes. They are also updated more regularly and coding is better for features like mobile responsiveness. If you are setting your blog up for business purposes, it is best to start with a premium theme.

Step 3: Choosing Your Theme

Now that some of the decision making is out of the way, it’s time to look at themes.

Free Themes

  1. In the Dashboard of your blog click on Themes under the Appearance tab.
  2. If you are looking for a free theme, click on WordPress.org Themes at the top.
  3. Select Feature Filter tab at the top.
  4. Here you can select the features you brainstormed about and want for your website under the Layout, Features, and Subject columns.
  5. Once you have your features selected, click on Apply Filters.
  6. You can go through and select Preview on each theme and view how it will look.
  7. If you find one you like, select Install on that theme.

Premium Themes

  2. Click on Demo for each theme to view how you can customize the theme for your blog.
  3. If you find one you like, select Buy for that theme and follow the steps.

Other Premium Themes

There are thousands of websites that sell WordPress themes. It can be fun to search through these sites, but also overwhelming at times. If you decide to choose one of these websites you want to make sure they have good reviews and great support. I personally found my WordPress theme on Pipdig. They are a popular site for finding modern designs for the lifestyle, beauty, and fashion bloggers.

Step 4: Customize Your Theme

Once you have chosen and installed your WordPress theme, now comes the fun part! Go back to your dashboard and select Customize under the Appearance tab. This will take you to a live demo of your blog where you can play with the layout, colors, fonts, and so many fun things to make your blog uniquely you!
