In 2009, my friends and I crashed a prom. It wasn’t on our agenda for that night. We sort of just happened to do it. I didn’t realize that crashing a prom was on my bucket list until after we accomplished it. We had arrived at a local casino for a beer festival that was being held in one of the conference rooms. Right next door to us was a local High School’s prom. I remember thinking to myself “Who hosts prom next door to a beer festival? That sounds like a recipe for disaster.” Turned out to be a recipe for fun, I just didn’t know it yet.
After a couple of hours enjoying ourselves at the beer festival we all had a little tipsiness going. And you know how alcohol can make you bend rules a little more than you normally would.. Well, at least that’s how it works for me. I tend to be a rule follower. My inhibitions were a little more laxed that night so when my friend took a look at all of us and said, “Let’s go crash prom, ” I WAS IN.
There were five of us. We made our way out the main door and quickly entered in the employee only hallway between the two conference rooms. A couple turns later and we were in. The room was dark, lights were darting across the packed dance floor, and there we were. Five adults in regular clothes, crashing prom.
Our first order of business was taking photos. How would anyone believe we were there if we didn’t have proof. Plus, the idea was hilarious to us. We stepped in front of a cityscape backdrop featuring a large bridge underneath a moonlight sky, and the photographer snapped our photo. Pics or it didn’t happen, right?
After we got our photos taken we grabbed a sundae. I never had a sundae served at my prom, but we obviously needed to indulge in some ice cream. Then we hit the dance floor for approximately one song. Not wanting to press our luck, we quickly made our way back to the beer festival.
Looking back, I can only imagine what people thought. Five grown adults in jeans running around the prom room. If the teachers or chaperones noticed, they didn’t say anything. If the kids noticed, they most likely didn’t care. Either way, we had a fun little 30-min adventure of crashing prom which has now turned into an awesome story I can tell people. “I crashed prom,” can be quite the conversation starter. It’s the bucket list item I never knew I had, but I am glad to have the fun memory to look back on now.
Life is full of so many ups and downs. There are so many things that are beyond our control. I truly believe that life should be filled with as many silly moments as possible. Crashing a prom was just that. A silly moment with friends to look back on, smile and reminiscence about.
